This Week’s Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 8/15/12

BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH #1 – THE MOST ANTICIPATED WATCHMEN PREQUEL ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY

FROM THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CREATIVE TEAM OF “JOKER” & “LUTHOR”

BEFORE WATCHMEN has been a freakin’ blast, folks, and we’ve been loving nearly every single one of these prequel series that set-up the world of WATCHMEN before the now-classic WATCHMEN series by ALAN MOORE and DAVE GIBBONS.

This dark, and fascinating spin on characters that are near mythological in terms of their iconic nature in the realm of comic storytelling has had us hooked.

And, now, I think we can all agree: this is what we’ve been waiting for. If there’s one character, and one character only, that has had us all on the edge of our seats awaiting his story to be told: it’s Rorschach. While we’ve loved the cameos in the current NITE-OWL series (Which is also very, very good), we’ve been dying to delve into the tortured psyche into one of comics most notorious anti-heroes.

Featuring one of the most stunning creative teams in the entire BEFORE WATCHMEN canon, RORSCHACH is brought to us by the team behind the now-classic “JOKER” and “LUTHOR: MAN OF STEEL”, BRIAN AZZARELLO and LEE BERMEJO.

These two are a powerhouse of a team, and the combination of Azzarello’s powerful storytelling and gritty plot twists mixes perfectly with the dark, painted realism of Bermejo’s artwork.

Having the two of these guys together on ANY book is a big deal, but having them together on what is quite possibly the single coolest character in the WATCHMEN canon?

Pretty damn awesome!

REVIVAL #2 — The most kick-ass new IMAGE series to launch since SAGA continues to impress this Wednesday!

Get #1 & #2 and find out why this is a MUST-READ!

REVIVAL has turned out to be one of our biggest favorites this year, and it’s obvious it’s taken the world of comics by surprise with it’s runaway success.

Written by TIM SEELEY (who totally amazes already with HACK/SLASH) and MIKE NORTON (the master of the Battle Pug! Check out the recently released BATTLEPUG graphic novel!), REVIVAL is one of the freshest new IMAGE series to launch in quite some time. It’s definitely following in the same footsteps of recent IMAGE hits like MORNING GLORIES, MANHATTAN PROJECTS, SAGA, and THIEF OF THIEVES.

A unique blending of genres, a strong plot, and a cast of characters that are instantly believable and relatable, REVIVAL is stacked with reasons as to why we’re loving it.

Imagine the movie ‘Fargo’, with zombies, zebras, and aliens, and that sums up REVIVAL in a nutshell.

But, for a more in-depth look at what it’s about, here’s the scoop: For one day in rural central Wisconsin, the dead came back to life. Now it’s up to Officer Dana Cypress to deal with the media scrutiny, religious zealots, and government quarantine that has come with them. In a town where the living have to lear nto deal with those who are supposed to be dead, Officer Cypress must solve a brutal murder, and everyone, alive or undead, is a suspect.

A beautiful ‘farm noir’ that puts a new twist on the zombie genre, REVIVAL is a unique gem and needs to be in your stack this Wednesday.

With issue #1′s first printings already turning into hot items on the back market, and the Third Eye variant of REVIVAL #1 nearly sold out, we do have plenty of REVIVAL #1 new printings available to get you on board and caught up to this week’s issue #2.

If the heat from #1 is any indication, #2 should be every bit as hot as #1, if not moreso, because the demand for this book is growing and growing.

Best of all: it’s really freakin’ good. :) Read it, love it!

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #10 – THE FUTURE OF MARVEL IS NOW! TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR THE AVENGERS, AND A NEW ERA IS AROUND THE CORNER

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN continues on to be one of the coolest freaking things we’re reading, and as we get closer and closer to it’s grand conclusion, we are really seeing the foundations being laid for the upcoming MARVEL NOW Relaunch, which is going to be OFF-THE-CHAIN!

Haven’t read MARVEL COMICS in a while? Get into AVX, Third Eye Faithful, trust us, this is the perfect place to jump into the Marvel Universe.

Much like FLASHPOINT served as a nice bridge into the DC NEW 52, Avengers vs. X-Men is leading the way into the MARVEL NOW, which is going to be a high-profile relaunch of Marvel’s core flagship titles at #1 with new creative teams, and directions, that look awesome!

As for the story of AVX itself, it all begins with the Phoenix’s return, and from there, we’re taken on a brutal war between the AVENGERS and the X-MEN, as they go toe-to-toe to preserve their worlds.

Cyclops and his chosen PhoeniXFive have splintered off from the core X-Men, and have taken it upon themselves to “fix” the world, putting the AVENGERS in quite a predicament.

Now, the Scarlet Witch and Hope are joining forces, in a last ditch effort to stop the madness.

You want a bigger-than-life story? You want non-stop, in-your-face action? AVENGERS VS. X-MEN is it. This is the definition of pure MARVEL magic, and we cannot recommend it enough.

Wanna get caught up? We’ve got issues 0-9 in stock now to catch you up to Wednesday’s #10.

SAGA #6 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING MORE OF WHAT IS QUICKLY GAINING OUR VOTE FOR “BEST COMIC OF 2012″

Imagine a mix of A GAME OF THRONES, FIREFLY & STAR WARS

We are so hooked on SAGA, it’s ridiculous. This is seriously in the lead for our vote as Best Comic of 2012. The writing, the artwork, the whole package is downright amazing, and this book is MONTHLY! That’s crazy! The amount of care, and craft that goes into each and every issue, and it’s been hitting it’s monthly schedule perfectly.

Written by the legendary BRIAN K. VAUGHAN (Y: THE LAST MAN, EX MACHINA) and illustrated by the uber-talented FIONA STAPLES (NORTH 40), SAGA is an epic sci-fi fantasy story for mature readers that will blow your mind!

Imagine the stylistic tone and feel of Joss Whedon’s FIREFLY, as well as his dialogue and knack for character-building, mix that with the political intrigue, and world-building of A GAME OF THRONES, throw in the epic nature of STAR WARS, and then spice up the sex and violence quotient a bit, and that’s SAGA.

Two people, from two warring planets, have a baby together, and that puts them in a lot of trouble. Now, they’re traversing the galaxy, trying to protect their child, and survive, while being hunted by two armies, bounty hunters, and more.

This book simply put, RULES.

Don’t sleep, folks, just try it, we promise: you’ll be hooked!

What if everything we knew about DEADPOOL became just downright disturbing? What if all those heads in his voice all went away, and only one was left… a sinister one, with one motivation: DEATH.

THE CULT FAVORITE TV SERIES JERICHO CONTINUES ON WITH JERICHO: SEASON 4 #1 THIS WEDNESDAY! WRITTEN BY THE ORIGINAL WRITING STAFF OF THE TV SERIES!

The TV Show JERICHO was one of our big favorites back in the day, and we really felt that it ended way before it’s time. Luckily, IDW Publishing felt the same way, and has picked up the story of JERICHO with this killer new limited series delivering JERICHO SEASON 4.

Overseen by the original writing staff of the television series, JERICHO is back with a vengeance, with a whole new chapter of stories told in teh show’s official continuity. If you are a fan of Jericho, you need this book!

In the tradition of the nail-biting suspense and intrigue that fans of the show have come to expect and love, Jericho Season Four picks up where Season Three left off. Though Jake and Hawkins are happy to be back in Jericho, the challenges they face are daunting.

Not only are they fugitives in their own hometown, but they find themselves forced to play host to the newest member of the Jericho community — John Smith.. a man who some know as a friend of the resistance, but who Jake and Hawkins know as the man behind the September Attacks.

GREEN LANTERN #12 — THE RETURN OF BLACK HAND CONTINUES, AS THE ROAD TO “GREEN LANTERN: THE THIRD WAR” BECOMES MORE CLEAR

We’ve been big fans of Geoff Johns’s work on GREEN LANTERN for years now, and the title is starting to pick up the same steam it had during the height of BLACKEST NIGHT, as we get closer and closer to THE THIRD WAR story arc that’ll be dominating the DC UNIVERSE this Fall.

Currently, Johns is telling a story that we’ve been dying to see told since the conclusion of BLACKEST NIGHT: the Return of BLACK HAND! And, now, free of the Indigo Tribe, BLACK HAND seems to be more powerful than ever.

What motivations does this former herald of Nekron hold now that his Black Lantern Corps is no longer a thing? And what lengths will Hal and Sinestro have to go to stop him?

Totally kick-ass, we’re loving GREEN LANTERN more and more, and cannot recommend this one enough. Add it to your mix of DC NEW 52 titles, and give it a shot!

Wanna get caught up? You can either jump onto the current arc with GREEN LANTERN #11, or we’ve got issues 1-11 in stock now to catch you up to this week’s #12.

PAIZO’S PATHFINDER GAME SYSTEM ENTERS THE WORLD OF COMICS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH PATHFINDER #1, written by IMAGE COMICS ALL-STAR JIM ZUB of SKULLKICKERS fame!

A must for tabletop gamers & fans of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS & A GAME OF THRONES

We’re huge fans of SKULLKICKERS, Third Eye Faithful, and really see it as a demonstration of what makes for a damn good sword-and-sorcery comic. So, when we heard that Jim Zub, the writer of SKULLKICKERS, was going to be bringing his talents to the world of Paizo’s tabletop role-playing system, PATHFINDER, and their new comic series.. we knew we were in store for something awesome.

There’s a serious lack of good sword and sorcery comics on the stands these days, and PATHFINDER is going to do a good job of providing you that sword-and-sorcery fix; throw in the skills of Zub, and you know you’re in for an epic read featuring all the things you love about a good sword and sorcery adventure: monsters, treasure, cool weapons, warriors, and magic.

Brilliant stuff, Third Eye Faithful, this is going to be a blast!

Picture this: Valeros can rely on his sword arm and his friends, the mysterious and beautiful sorcerer Seoni and silver tongued quick-witted elven rogue Merisiel, but nothing can prepare him for the dangers that lurk ahead.

The scattered and chaotic goblin tribes of Varisia are changing, growing in power and unifying in ways no one has ever seen before. At the heart of this strange evolution is an ancient evil looking to establish itself anew. The iconic heroes at the core of Pathfinder’s world are brought to life for the first time in a brand new story full of charm and high adventure that will hook anyone who digs on A GAME OF THRONES, SKULLKICKERS, the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS mythology, or LORD OF THE RINGS.

CAPTAIN MARVEL RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY IN CAPTAIN MARVEL #2, THE EXCITING NEW FOLLOW-UP TO ISSUE #1

The new CAPTAIN MARVEL series is shaping up to be one of our favorite takes on the character, and one of the better new Marvel books to launch this Summer. As one of the “early bird” titles for Marvel’s new line-up, CAPTAIN MARVEL demonstrates a flair for innovation, strong storytelling, and kick-ass artwork.

Kelly Sue DeConnick delivers a strong, in-your-face take on Carol Danvers that matches up to the iconic nature of one of our favorite Marvel characters, and Dexter Soy’s artwork is a perfect match, as it’s every bit as innovative, and distinct as the storytelling that accompanies it.

We also have to admit: we love the very Miracleman/Marvelman look to Carol’s new costume. Very cool stuff.

MICHAEL AVON OEMING’S THE VICTORIES #1 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY FROM DARK HORSE COMICS TO TELL A DARK, AND TWISTED TAKE ON SUPERHEROES!

The MOST disturbing, and demented take on superheroes since THE BOYS

Here’s one that’s pretty darn exciting, and trust us, folks, this one is way more violent and disturbing than the cover suggests.

From the artist and co-creator of POWERS, Michael Avon Oeming, comes this killer new DARK HORSE series, THE VICTORIES, which is the raunchiest, most disturbing take on superheroes that we’ve read since Garth Ennis’s THE BOYS debuted.

Not long from now, all that will stand between you and evil are the Victories — six heroes sworn to protect us from crime, corruption, and the dark. As one member cracks down on the violence, he discovers himself touched by a painful past through the psychic powers of Link. Will this trauma cause him to self-destruct or continue the fight?

And, just what sinister motives do his team-mates have in mind? You know what they say about absolute power… it corrupts absolutely.

THE CROW’S REVIVAL CONTINUES IN THIS WEDNESDAY’S THE CROW #2

THE CROW, I think, can fairly enough be called iconic, as it holds a huge part in the memories of many fans who grew up reading comics in the late ’80s and ’90s, and then even has a larger significance for many of us who were introduced to the character through the Brandon Lee movie.

And, lets face it: the Crow kicks ass. This is why we’re so totally pumped about the new CROW series from IDW Publishing, which features a return to form for the CROW, and is the best take on the characters and their mythos since the original JAMES O’BARR Crow stuff.

In this new series, the CROW has been reborn in blood and loss through something that may be worse than death. Displaced spirits, torn from their living bodies, wander Tokyo as the mystery deepens. The Crow is on a mission of vengeance, his samurai sword splashing blood, but he must also uncover hidden truths as he penetrates level after level of secrets within the shadowy corridors of Biotrope.. adn the dark recesses of a mysterious island off the coast of Japan.

WALKING DEAD #101 arrives this Wednesday, picking up where the epic issue #100 concluded! A MUST-READ!

Who’s that with the crossbow on the cover? :) We can’t wait to find out!

OK. We know the drill. There’s so many different formats we all read WALKING DEAD in, so it’s easy to spoiler stuff for some, when talking about what’s happening in the monthly — so we’ll keep our mouths shut.

All we will say is this: if you thought 100 was awesome, wait’ll you read 101. And, is that a crossbow we see on the cover? ;)

Plus: LUCILLE!

Wanna get caught up for the current arc? We’ve got issues 97-100 (the issues that come after the 16th trade paperback) to get you up to speed for issue #101.

HOMECOMING #1 arrives from ASPEN (Lady Mechanika, Charismagic, Idolized) this Wednesday, bringing to life a series that was created by the late, great Michael Turner!

You know, it’s always a bummer when we think of how soon we lost the uber-talented Michael Turner, but it’s also great to see his ideas and inspirations living on in his company ASPEN.

Homecoming is a series that Turner had created with Scott Lobdell and David Wohl, and now Aspen is bringing it to life, and it looks like a blast!

Hunter wilson is just an average American teenager in an average American town, but when the beautiful and amnesiac Celeste arrives in his backyard, Hunter’s life will change forever. He discovers that Celeste had disappeared from that very house 10 years earlier, and now she’s back with little memory of who she was — but with strange, fantastic abilities and the knowledge that dark forces are rapidly approaching!

Now, Hunter must help Celeste regain her memory while he tries to keep himself and his friends safe — and if that wasn’t difficult enough, Homecoming is just a week away and he doesn’t have a date to the dance yet!

THE VALIANT RELAUNCH CONTINUES AS BLOODSHOT #2 DELIVERS ANOTHER STELLAR READ THIS WEDNESDAY

Valiant blew our minds again last month with the brand new BLOODSHOT relaunch title, and we’re freakin’ LOVING it. Their unique, and cutting edge approach to the superhero genre has us hooked, and the books have a great edge, they’re somewhere between Image Comics’s style of innovation and cutting-edge storytelling and Marvel/DC’s iconic shared-universe storytelling. Very cool stuff.

In BLOODSHOT #2, we see that waking up inside a body bag is no way to start the day. But that’s where Bloodshot is, and worse yet, he’s 35,000 fet above the desert, guarded by some of the toughest soldierso n the planet. He’s being flown back to the people who created him, who may have even betrayed him, and he’s having a real hard time separating his false memories (of family, duty, country) from the grim reality (of bullets, blood, and screaming.) Who’s really on his side? Why was he created? Where does the “real Bloodshot” end and the programming begin? There’s only one way to find out — by reaching up and opening that body bag. And, God have mercy on anyone who comes face-to-face with the weapon — no, the man — no, the soldier — known only as Bloodshot.

Killer stuff, Third Eye Faithful! If you haven’t read it yet, we’ve got issues 1 in stock now to get you up to this week’s #2.

CLASSIC POPEYE ONGOING #1 DELIVERS REPRINTS OF THE CLASSIC 1948 BUD SAGENDORF POPEYE COMICS! BROUGHT TO US BY THE ONE AND ONLY CRAIG YOE & IDW PUBLISHING!

We’ve been so into the new POPEYE series from IDW which has a very throwbacky nature to it, and we’re totally pumped about this new ongoing series of reprintings of the original Bud Sagendorf Popeye strips.

These are some amazingly well-crafted comics, Third Eye Faithful, and to be able to read them in a lovingly reprinted, and represented edition from the folks at Yoe Comics (Craig Yoe does all those rad IDW hardcover reprints of stuff like old 3D Comics, Christmas Comics, etc., and he’s all around awesome), is pretty darn cool.

Plus, you also get some all-new Popeye comics that’ve been created by modern creators just for this comic.

A total blast from the past, and a beautiful presentation, we cannot give this one a higher recommendation! Try it!

FATALE #7 — ED BRUBAKER & SEAN PHILLIPS’S AMAZING BLEND OF CRIME NOIR & THE OCCULT CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY! ALWAYS A MUST READ!

One of our favorite IMAGE titles of the past year has definitely been FATALE, as it brings together one of our favorite creative teams in comics: Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, the guys behind CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO.

FATALE is a blending of their unique spin of crime noir with otherworldly horror comic storytelling. In other words: it’s Cthulhu ganglords, it’s death cults, it’s cursed femme fatales, it’s all of these things and more.

As the second arc continues, we’re taken into the dark secrets of the mid-70s Los Angeles criminal and occult underworlds. Drugs, sex, cults, fame, and murder, all walk hand in hadn in the shadow of demonic forces.

An excellent trip through LA Noir at it’s finest, as we follow the femme fatale arch-type that Brubaker and Phillips have crafted so well.

Wanna get on board FATALE? We’ve got issues 1-6 in stock now to catch you up, or you can grab the first trade paperback, collecting 1-5, and catch up with 6 & 7.

THIRD EYE TOY SPOTLIGHTS: GOOD LUCK TROLLS RETURN & HALO GOES BLIND-BOX WITH HALO AVATAR MINI-FIGURES!

Here’s a couple of new toy lines we’re getting in this week at Third Eye that we thought were too cool to not give some spotlight too. First off, are the blind-boxed Good Luck Troll figures, which are done in the style of the old-school Trolls. If you grew up in the ’60s or early ’90s, then you remember the huge fads these things were, and our nostalgia (as members of that early ’90s generation who remembers the Troll Warriors comics… yikes!) kicked in hardcore on these!

Also, in the realm of blind-boxed figures, we’ve got the new HALO SERIES 1 X-Box Live Avatar Mini-Figures, which are totally random, totally cool blind-boxed figures of little Spartan soldiers.

Too freakin’ cool!

STAFF PICKS

STEVE: GAMBIT #1- The way a GAMBIT series SHOULD BE DONE! Just lots of action, and Gambit being a bad-ass, stealing the heck out of everything. What’s not to love?

TRISH:  THE MASSIVE #3 - This series is really getting good! I’m hooked!

TORMA:  BATMAN #12 - A fantastic endpiece to the COURT OF OWLS.. I can’t wait for the next arc to start!

SHAUN: GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #1  - James Stokoe doing Godzilla?! MOAR PLZ. This will suffice to keep me over until the next issue of ORC STAIN!

RYAN:   PUNK ROCK JESUS #2 - Sean Murphy really knows how to put the real world into comics. Media is portrayed as a dark and twisted machine. Definitely a great book.
